Playing in Biarritz

Uniquely positioned between the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, Biarritz is a wonderland for outdoor enthusiasts and sports fans. Below, I have detailed the most popular activities and my own personal additions of fun ways to spend your early mornings, evenings, and weekends in Biarritz.

Surfing

Beginners (Need help to learn or improve control of their board)

La Vague Basque (Surf School) at Cote des Basques - Website

Plum (Surf School) at La Grande Plage - Website

Intermediate (Know how to surf, are ok with crowds)

Good places to surf include; Grande Plage, Miramar, Cote des Basques, Milady, and Ilbiarritz. If the waves get too big, you can always head south to a different facing beach, like Hendaye.

Advanced (Comfortable paddling long distances/dodging rocks/etc)

Cenitz, Parlamentia, VVF, Cavaliers.

Rugby

Biarritz Olympique is the local rugby team and you can typically find a match to attend throughout the year, except for the Summer break. The energy at the Rugby matches is great and something that you will need to experience for yourself. The matches are full of action and cheering and certainly can be everything from a guys’ or girls’ night to a family outing.

Pelote Basque, Jai alai

The traditional sport of Basque Country is Jai alai. You will notice all the outdoor (as well as indoor) ‘frontons’ or jai alai courts dotted throughout each village. There are professional as well as amateur leagues. St. Jean de Luz and Biarritz have the largest and most well known frontons where the championships are held each year.

If you would like to give the sport a try yourself, my friend Patxi Tambourindeguy who is an international champion, runs a ‘Pelote Experience’ where he will personally teach you all the forms of pelote Basque. It is a great time and even my own mother approves!
